Abstract
Local histories by non-professional historians constitute a rapidly expanding genre world-wide. Thirteen case studies - from seven different African countries, India and Nepal - look at the authors, their books and their audiences, analysing the genre's intellectual background and its cultural and political impact in local and wider areas.
