La pertinence de l’exemple historique pour la délibération

Résumé: Cet article met en discussion l’affirmation d’Aristote selon laquelle l’exemple serait un argument
privilégié du genre délibératif. La première partie vise à identifier, sur le plan théorique, les
propriétés de l’exemple qui en feraient un outil particulièrement adapté à la délibération. La
seconde partie consiste en l’analyse de quelques exemples utilisés comme arguments par Barack
Obama dans son discours de State of the Union du 25 janvier 2011. Il s’agit ainsi de voir dans
quelle mesure il est possible d’identifier un « type » d’exemple délibératif.

Abstract:
In this article I discuss the aristotelian idea according to which examples are particularily relevant
arguments for deliberation. In the first part, I try to identify, on a theoretical level, some
characteristics of examples that make them suitable tools for deliberation. The second part is an
analysis of examples used as arguments by Barack Obama in his State of the Union Address of
january 25, 2011. The aim is to determine the extent to which it is possible to identify a “type” of
argumentative example.
