Het museum en de geschiedschrijving: over de betekenis van archeologische en historische objecten in een museale context // [The museum and historiography: On the significance of archeological and historical objects in the context of a museum]

Abstract
The scientific value of objects is determined by the contextual information acquired after the study of all available literary, iconographic, and material sources. Subjecting the objects and their contexts to stringent historical criticism defines the criteria for collecting, preserving, and exhibiting them as well as their semiotic value. Presenting material culture in a way to reflect as much as possible how it was experienced in the past determines the quality of a museum.
