Abstract
The article presents the author's reflections on the philosophy of history, particularly in regards to the idealism of "progress" and the value of the past on present and future civilization. The contrasting philosophies of Friederich Nietzsche, Gordon Wood, and Walter Benjamin are addressed in turn, each offering a view of how historical knowledge is applied or appropriated to the present circumstance.
