Abstract
Analyzes the results of sociological surveys done in the late 1980's and 1990's in Russia and interprets them to determine the contemporary state of historical consciousness and historical memory in the country. Defines historical consciousness, historical memory, and historical knowledge and presents the survey responses to such inquiries as the level of satisfaction with the teaching of history in school (only four percent gave a positive assessment of history teaching), the relative importance of various historical figures and events, the era or area of history of most interest to the respondents, and similar matters.
