De l'édition Ladvocat aux Mémoires d'outre-tombe : la Restauration réécrite // [From the Ladvocat Edition to the "Mémoires d'outre-tombe": The Restoration Rewritten]

Abstract
While preparing his complete works for their publication by Ladvocat, Chateaubriand had presented its parts as documents justifying and illustrating the Mémoires (Memoirs From Beyond the Grave) he was composing and which were forthcoming; but in July, disillusion overcame him and he could no longer see them as such. From the beyond the grave perspective of the Memoirs, the issue is no longer the author's ego, or his time, but Time itself. With this in mind he reworked his old texts in order to lead the reader to perceive, in their fragments dispersed throughout his Memoirs, time and the vicissitudes of human destiny through the history of the Bourbon Restoration's failure. The part of the Memoirs devoted to the Restoration will no longer be that developed by a scrupulous historian : the memorialist will choose to make succinct history in order to offer beyond this specific age a vision of History in all its depth.
