Discusses the notions of historical contingency, temporality, and meaning in connection with Ton Nijhuis's 'Structuur en Contingentie: Over de Grenzen van het Sociaal-Wetenschappelijk Verklaringsideaal in de Duitse Geschiedschrijving' (1996), the originality of which lies in its attempt to reaffirm the unity of the study of history.
