David Gary Shaw

Biography and/or project

My research interests span the social and cultural history of medieval England, currently focussing on topics relating to communication and cultural exchange. I have written most on aspects of urban history and the character of the medieval social self. Within the theory of history, I have worked as an editor of “History & Theory” and have a broad interest in both the philosophy of history, historiography, and historical methodology. Particular interests have included agency and historical selves, religion, what Ian Hacking calls 'historical ontology', the history of animals, and the use of actor network theory within historiography.
