Mario Wimmer

Biography and/or project

Mario Wimmer is an historian of modern Europe with particular interest in the history of intellectual practice and the theory of the humanities. He helps run the Zurich Institute for Advanced Study, Collegium Helveticum, as managing director. He received his PhD in History from the University of Bielefeld in 2010, was a postdoc at ETH Zurich (2010-2012), and has thaught in UC Berkeley's rhetoric department (2013-2017) as well as in Basel's media studies program. He is working on a book on "Ranke's Blindness" that explores how the late Leopold von Ranke worked with the hands and eyes of others.
